Adventure

With summer here, and a three year old in the house, something has really begun to sink in… I love being the mother of a son. I had plenty of adventure when I was a little girl, but Brendan is opening my eyes to a whole new brand of adventure. I feel like I get to go back and experience childhood through the eyes of a boy, and it’s so much fun. Suddenly I want to go camping and have sword fights and talk about strength and bravery. I gravitate to Peter Pan and the Lost Boys even more than Tinkerbell and the mermaid lagoon. I set up tents in the house, I check out construction sites and race cars, I collect feathers from walks so we can make a headdress. My new favorite movies involve dragons and cars rather than drama and romance and I make playlists called ‘superhero music’. I think of the years to come and can’t wait to spend my days on sports fields, or my vacations in cabins or sleeping bags or RV’s driving across the country. In short: I’m finding myself seeking adventure.

I guess this is why I have been carefully tracking a package this week. It started out as a necessity to keep up with my speedy son on our outside rides, but I realized that I felt much less like a practical Mom and more like a kid on Christmas Eve. When we got home from school today, there it was…

Mommy’s new scooter. Best summer ever.

And speaking of summer and adventure, Daddy and Brendan went on another epic bike ride exploration this weekend. It was hot, and they stopped to eat a popsicle. Daddy reports that it was a nice quiet moment between father and son when Brendan suddenly broke out with the big finish part of one of his new favorite songs, “Innnnnn Suuuuuuummmmeeeeeer!” More on our summer Frozen Frenzy later.

I’m also happy to report, that Brendan is now fully outfitted with the coolest knee pads, elbow pads and gloves ever.

As a side benefit, they might just happen to protect that little daredevil body I love so much.
We went to a real movie in a theater this weekend to catch “How to Train Your Dragon 2” before it left theaters. We all loved it. Brendan sat still for almost the entire film. At one point he got a little fidgety and I asked him if he wanted to take a walk. He said yes, so Daddy took him. They were back moments later – apparently as soon as they hit the top of the aisle, Brendan said he wanted to go back – that he ‘only wanted to go to the top of the ramp’. On the way out, Mommy pulled this viking hat out of her purse (don’t leave home without one) and Chief Brendan walked a few inches taller the rest of the day.

We have also very surely hit the “why” stage. Oh boy have we hit the why stage. Questions about everything from Pixie Dust to why bad guys are bad, to why he can’t go to school with no pants on. I don’t mind the questions at all. As a philosopher, why is practically my middle name. I’m more worried that Brendan will stop asking why if I give him too much narrative. I’m trying to curb my over-thinking and give three year old appropriate wonder-filled answers. One night he was asking about a shooting star. I gave a brief explanation and then got to the good part – that you got to make a wish when you saw one. We both did our wishing and then he asked (for the first time ever) – ‘what did you wish for?’ I responded with an ‘I can’t tell!’ but then cheated by asking him what he wished for. His answer was simple and perfect: “Cake.” So I told him what I had wished for – that he would live happily ever after. He thought for a second and then with a chuckle in his voice responded “Noooooooo!!!” Why would anyone wish to live happily ever after when they could wish for CAKE? Why indeed.

It wasn’t cake, but we did go back to our new favorite spot for some amazing pizza and free cookie dessert. All that with a side of a beautiful drive, and an extra full moon viewed out of a dirty windshield make for a happy evening. Dirty windshields reek of adventure, don’t you think?

Brendan is doing an awesome job in his new Shark room class adventure at school. The other day I asked him who his favorite new teacher was and without a moment of hesitation he responded, “Teacher Laura”. Teacher Laura is fairly new and I don’t know her very well yet. When I asked him what he liked about Teacher Laura, he said, “I like sitting on her lap when I don’t make good choices.” Hmmmm…. Rob and I have laughed so many times thinking of Brendan saying, “Teacher Laaaauuuuura….I just threw a toy!”. I have certainly seen him make some questionable choices, but I have also seen him playing and learning with a whole new focus, and even more importantly – doing a very good job of sharing and empathizing with his new friends.

Whether we are eating cake or riding scooters or having a sword fight or singing show tunes, it all feels like the summer of adventure to me. In short: Brendan = adventure. And it’s the best one yet. But check back in with my spirit of adventure after our first camping trip.
