Christmas came early

About 2 weeks ago, Linda wrote and told us that there was a possibility that she was going to be sent to a bored meeting in San Francisco.  She wanted to know if we would have time to see her. As usual, Linda asks crazy questions. We were on pins and needles with the possibility of seeing her in our home town, and when the trip was confirmed, we convinced her to bring Meredith too.

I spent all day yesterday trying to keep my sappiness in check, and since I’m now so practiced, and just recently gushed about Meredith’s wonderfulness, I will spare you what’s going on in my heart, and just tell you about our day.

It started with breakfast.  Actually, I guess it started with me sending them many mails with way too much planning, and way too many suggestions of things we could do.  But they came on a Monday.  If you are coming to visit me, please don’t ever come on a Monday because it turns out all of my favorite restaurants are closed.  But we had some delicious orange juice, and a nice time catching up and baby ogling over breakfast.  Then we had to drop Linda off for her meetings and we stole Meredith away for the day.

It was her first time in San Francisco, and with only one day here, we decided that we needed to show her around the city.  We did.  And in the midst of sites that we knew little to nothing about the history of (Golden Gate Bridge, Pier 39, Lombard Street, Fishermen’s Wharf, The Sutro Baths…) we mixed in fascinating sites and vivid details of some lesser known landmarks (Lori’s first apartment, the deli where Rob and Lori met and shared our first sandwich,  the ship where Lori spent the night in fifth grade, the place where Rob got his glasses…).  The tour was really something special, let me tell ya. We did take her to work so we could take some pictures with Star Wars characters and make her brother jealous.  While we were there, we ate at the cafeteria which sounds about as exciting as the tour, but they have a pretty good sushi chef.  We were hoping to do some champagne and cupcake tasting followed by buzzed shopping, but Monday thwarted us again – so we had to settle with a sundae from Ghiradelli Chocolate Factory.  We ended up in Union Square  to look at the pretty Christmas lights (Um, Macy’s has KITTENS AND PUPPIES in their Christmas windows…) and wait for Linda to call and tell us she was free.

Dinner was served at our house, and we were sooooo excited to have them here.  We love getting to picture them in their home in Iowa, and now they can picture Brendan in his room, and all of us sitting around the table together.  It truly felt like having family visit.  I didn’t even use the silver or the cloth napkins – because sadly, family has to take us as we are – and Meredith and Linda were the most gracious guests.  We sat around the table and talked about next visits and laughed at Brendan’s raspberries (and his new trick:  the smile with tongue showing).  I’m so thankful for the opportunity to see them, and I know it will be one of my favorite memories of the holiday season.

I’m including many pictures because we were literally instructed to take a thousand pictures.  I don’t think we quite made it, but we came close.  The baby only made it out of his carriage for a few of the outside shots because it was FREEZING outside! (okay, not for the girl from Iowa, but for the Californians it was cold…)
