One Year

A year ago today we were just walking into the hospital. Meredith had called us at 7:15pm on the 21st. We were on a plane out of SFO at 12:50am, and landed in Minnesota at 6:15am on 6/22. Then came the three hour drive to Waterloo and we arrived at the hospital around 11:45. We had been in touch with Meredith throughout the journey, and it seemed like we would arrive in plenty of time – but we just made it. He was born at 1:07pm. That’s 11:07 California time, and you can be sure we will be celebrating the arrival of this little bundle of love. We miss Iowa. We miss Meredith and her family. Everything about that place and that time feels incredibly sacred to us. I will always be extra grateful that The Captain waited for us to get to Iowa, and that Meredith gave us the gift of being present for his birth. There are so many emotions I could dwell on, but let me focus on the birthday boy.

Tomorrow is the big party, so we thought today we would do some of Brendan’s favorite things. We started with a long ride in his car:

He’s having his first cake tomorrow, but I thought about his love for bananas and tried out some banana bread. After singing happy birthday, making a wish, and blowing out his candle, he decided that he likes banana bread.

All of us are wearing the exact same thing we wore one year ago today. Poor Brendan got the short end of that stick:

We decided not to make him wear that all day, so he is wearing an outfit representative of his first name.

And then, after studying Dad for weeks, he did his first tooth brushing with his very own toothbrush.

So far it’s been a bang up morning. I can’t believe it’s been a year.
