Tuesday Footnote

I was ready for bed last night and didn’t get to add a little commentary about our vacation day. I did mention that Brendan would dream of vanilla ice cream, and I’d like to add that we are sticking to our original idea that he won’t try any sugar until he eats Grandma’s birthday cake at his first birthday. At least most of the time. But we’re on vacation, and yesterday was national chocolate chip cookie day, and when your son looks longingly at your ice cream, exceptions must be made.  I have never seen his mouth open so wide.

The other Gianinos did a segway tour yesterday morning (and loved it!) so Brendan and I took a walk around the grounds, and settled in at a beautiful spot where Mommy could listen to the waves and Brendan could take a nap in the shade of a palm tree with the breeze blowing his hair.  It was a nice moment.  Then the family got home and we got down to the pool for the rest of the day.  Brendan was ready for action.  We barely dip his toes in the water and he is lurching to get the rest of his body in.  There are two pools that are his favorites – the baby pool, which is the perfect temperature as well as the perfect depth.  Brendan can put his little feet on the bottom, and Mommy and Daddy can sit comfortably to play with him.  The other pool he likes is for slightly older kids.  It’s about 4 feet deep, has a dramatic rock waterfall (not for swimming, just for hiding under) and best of all, a twisty slide.  The Captain isn’t old enough for the slide, but he loves to watch Mommy and Daddy go down.  He quickly figured out the right spot to look so he could wave and smile at the top, and then he watched the bottom and waited for the splash at the end.   I haven’t gone down the slide this many times in years.

Yesterday was a healthy day of eating for Mommy – Nachos by the pool, ice cream sandwich – and then a burger and fries at the “Kahuna Grill” which is apparently a local favorite, confirmed by the fact that we saw Rob’s surf instructors eating there.  And speaking of surfing, did you see those pictures of my husband catching a wave?  Hubba hubba.  I’m hoping that he decides this is not just a hobby but a lifestyle.  We can quit our jobs and travel from beach to beach looking for surf Endless Summer style. At least for a couple of weeks every year.
