The thing about vacation

The thing about vacation is that it has to come to an end. If vacation was every day, then it wouldn’t be vacation. You’d eventually have to go grocery shopping and pay bills and clean your house – and you’d probably have to find a job somewhere in there too. And then the best part of vacation would cease to be – because at least for me, it’s not about where I am, it’s about unfettered time with my family. It’s about focusing only on the fun and the being together. It’s license to eat your favorite foods and wear your favorite clothes and keep the baby up snuggling a little later than usual. And the thing about Disneyworld is that it’s a land focused on families vacationing. Sure – they are in business to make money, but so is every business. What they choose to focus on is making magic happen. Making people happy. And there are a million different ways to experience Disney. I want one of those signs to hang over the front door of my home. And that is a little part of vacation land that I will bring home with me. Maybe I won’t be quite so rigid about my chores and keeping everyone on schedule. Maybe I will give in to the midnight rice krispy treat with sprinkles a little more often. Maybe I’ll let all of us have sleepovers in the same room now and then so I can hear my baby wake up laughing. And I will definitely look for more opportunities to create magical memories out of every day things. Because lets be honest, Brendan loved the train in Germany, he loved meeting Minnie Mouse – but he really loved the ducks and the lizards and getting to eat ice cream like a big boy – and having cousins to hug and play with. Those are things that you don’t have to go to Disney to enjoy. We just need a little dab of vacation pixie dust sprinkled over every day life to see things in the right perspective, and focus on the things that matter most.

So today, the experience ends, but the memories begin. We leave vacation land, but we return home – which is the place I love most of all.
