Big day at school

Lots of things happened at school this week. We got back his first school photos. Let me just say that they do not disappoint. Not from the standpoint of  being so wonderful, but from the expectation that school pictures are often hilarious. I waited to peek until Rob and I could look together, and when we opened the envelope we both wondered who that boy was. The good news is, we have plenty to give out! Sigh…

I also got a call from Ms. Jennifer who said, ‘If you get down here quick, you can see Brendan sitting in a bucket of water!’. I didn’t ask questions, I just sprinted down there – but my assumption was that he had some kind of bodily blow-out so enormous that it warranted a soak in a bucket. Turns out there was no blow-out, they were just enjoying some water play. (see photos below)

We also had Brendan’s first parent conference on Friday. Thursday night Rob gave Brendan that Dad look and said, ‘If there is anything you want to get off your chest, now is the time….’ But the kid kept quiet. I didn’t know what to expect from a conference for an 8 month old baby, but it was awesome. Ms. Gracie sat down and went through a printed report that had all their observations about Brendan – personality, milestones, routines, concerns… Of course Ms. Gracie is so great about giving us feedback daily that there weren’t a lot of surprises, but here were some of my favorite nuggets:

  • Brendan always wants to be part of whatever is going on in the classroom.  While some kids show certain aversions, Brendan is always up for anything.
  • He does show particular fondness for anything involving music or art.  And of course, he is an adrenaline junkie and likes to be startled.
  • He is great at playing independently, but is also very social – and is elated whenever anyone walks into the room, or comes to hang out with him.  And that goes for both adults and children.
  • He shows that he is building good character – he will try and try a new skill without getting frustrated, and then after a while if he really can’t figure it out, he will let out a little cry to let you know he needs help.
  • He doesn’t show any signs of stranger anxiety – he loves people – but is also not distraught when people walk away.
  • Ms. Gracie actually said she had no concerns at this time – that he is a happy, smiley, giggly, easy going baby who goes with the flow.

These are things that Rob and I have noticed, but it sure was nice to hear that he is the same amazing boy at school that he is at home. Although there were a couple major diaper incidents at school this week… and there was a note on his form that said he was ‘disgusted’ with the spinach/potato meal.
