Halloween

There was one thing Brendan was clear on: He wanted to be a ‘race car’ for Halloween. Lightning McQueen, to be exact. Starting in early September, whenever anyone asked him what he wanted to be for Halloween, his answer was always the same: “A Race Car”. He also wanted Mommy to be “a blue race car” or sometimes, “a princess race car”, and he wanted Daddy to be “a black race car”. How in the world do you made a race car costume? Well, I found a reasonable start to one on the internets. After it arrived, I spent several hours doctoring it up so that it was befitting of our favorite boy. I organized some “pit crew” costumes in the same red/white/black color scheme so that Mommy and Daddy could be his biggest supporters. We were ready. And as we started to get dressed… Brendan decided that he wanted to be Peter Pan. And the look on his face as he gazed at himself in the mirror, told me that even though I’m not a seamstress like my own Mom, it was the perfect decision when I followed my emotional Mom instincts, and whipped up that Peter Pan costume.

It’s all about the sword, really. Since I had not whipped up a Wendy or Captain Hook costume, it also meant no costume changes for Mommy and Daddy. Which was totally fine, because this was all about Brendan. He got it this year. We talked about trick-or-treating, we read books that featured trick-or-treating, but we still decided to pick a nice safe house to practice on first. We walked next door, and we knocked on The Uncles’ door….

and we waited…

Then we tried the doorbell:

And we started to think that nobody was home…

But finally, Uncle Brian answered the door (mid pirate transformation!). Brendan said, ‘tirck-or-treat!” and selected his candy. It’s hard to do with a sword in one hand and a pumpkin in the other!

And then it was on! We just had to figure out where to start.

We were heading out around the same time as some of our neighborhood friends, and Brendan was very excited to hit a few houses with them:

But then Brendan had an idea. He decided that he could cover more ground if he rode his BIKE around the neighborhood:

He insisted on carrying his pumpkin on his handlebars. This went on for a little while until Mommy saw the concerned looks on other parents faces as my tiny Peter Pan flew by. So we used the bike opportunity to hit one more special house:

And then we went home.
We get A LOT of kids in our neighborhood. There are a lot of kids actually living in the neighborhood, but Rob and I swear they must bus kids in for Halloween. We bought over 600 pieces of candy, and had about 20 pieces left over. Rob and I have to bring in help to manage all these kids, plus a nervous dog, and now a full fledged trick-or-treator. He had a great night, and after he was done trick-or-treating, Daddy and I showed him how to dump out all his candy and sort it into ‘sames’. The Great Pumpkin also left him some little Halloween toys so that it wasn’t too tempting to eat all the candy. But the next day we put a special treat in his lunch – 4 M&M’s with a little note that said ‘Happy Friday!’. (and yes, that’s 4 actual pieces of candy, not 4 bags of candy….)

I loved watching my little Peter Pan enjoy his third Halloween. And we’ll just cross our fingers that another opportunity presents itself for a family of race cars.
