Yogurt and Catch-up

I fall so behind on writing down all the wonder of Captain B. I always think it’s okay because there is no way I’ll forget – but I don’t remember every detail, and that makes me sad. So it’s time for a little catch-up of recent events.

Last weekend on our weekly trip to the grocery store, Brendan noticed me putting his yogurt in the shopping cart. He decided he wanted some right there, but for obvious reasons we could not oblige. I tried to move the yogurt under some other things so he wouldn’t see it, but Daddy took it back out and showed him and said that he could have some when we got home. We finished up our shopping, and when we got home, Mister B walked over to the drawer where we keep his spoons, opened it up, and then stood there proudly with his ‘poon’ until we hurried up with his yogurt. He was so pleased with the entire experience that it forced me to take way too many pictures.

There are exactly 30 more yogurt pictures online.   Enjoy, Mom.

During my visits this week, Brendan and Harper have been especially adorable. One day I went with Aunt Lisa, and I asked Brendan, ‘who is this?’ (pointing to Harper). They both looked up at me and said, “Baboo!”. Then they looked at each other, pointed to each other, and simultaneously said, “Baboo”. Then they cracked themselves up. As they were going out to the yard, Harper fell and needed a little help getting up. The teachers knew we had the situation under control, so they had gone ahead, and since there were no rings to hold, I suggested they hold hands. They spent a few seconds awkwardly trying to figure out how to grab each others hands – but they finally made it happen. Watching those two little people walk down the hallway toward the playground made every single person stop and stare. Auntie Lisa started humming, “here comes the bride”. As they neared the door, we noticed Brendan looked uncomfortable and we realized that Harper has progressed into a death grip on B’s hand. Aunt Lisa literally had to pry her hand off. I explained to him that women can be like that. On another visit, Harper came over to Brendan sitting in a chair, and gave him an air kiss, followed by a very big hug. When she was done, Brendan looked up at me with a huge smile that said, ‘yeah, that’s right… I’m popular with the ladies.’

I got to do my first official duties as a member of the “PPG” (Parent Partnership Group) this week. It was no big deal, but it made me so happy to get to support my little man at his school. I’m so very honored and proud to be his Mama, and I will always try to do enough to let him know I support him in everything he does, without being so present that I smother him. I’m sure I’ll embarrass him no matter what…

The words continue to spill out each day – and we are now certain that he is communicating his first sentences. He says, “Puppy come!”. In fact those are usually his first words the moment he wakes up. He also says “Puppy go!”, usually when she is trying to root around in his highchair for scraps while he is still eating. And in the past few days he has expanded to “Daddy come” and “Mommy come”. Thankfully, he has not yet asked us to go. Tonight he also said a full, “hello” as clear as a bell when he was playing phone, and he said, “Bye Daddy” after we hung up the phone with him on the way home. He recognizes letters – but they are all “B’s”. And anything with wheels is either a “momo” if it has two wheels or looks funny (like a golf cart), or a “bus” if it’s car sized or bigger. I am most proud of the fact that he is starting to get the hang of saying please, or “peeeeese!”  He still needs to be prompted, but then he says it immediately.  He has switched from always saying “no” to more often saying “yeah”. It’s one of my new favorite things.

My other favorite is how he continues to get even better and better at giving real hugs. And he’s starting to give them out when we ask – a nice tight squeeze around the neck. When he is in the right mood, he will also give you a wide open mouthed kiss – but he would much rather pull mommy and daddy’s heads together to make them kiss when we have family hugs. He likes the over-exaggerated kissy sound we make.  I’m sure he will always like it when mommy and daddy kiss (hahaha).

We also went to visit our winery – the one where we essentially shared our first date. They have changed ownership and it’s a very sad thing. But Aunt Candace is still there, and she is one of the main reasons we still visit. That and the amazing wine… This time she brought us all down into the cellars for a special tour for Brendan, and some extra nice bottles of wine for us. It was so fun to see our little man running around in the vineyard where we used to dream about someday meeting him.
