Leprechaun Pie

What a weekend. As usual, it went by in a blur – but it’s a big happy blur.
Daddy had a work party Friday night, so it was just me and the little man. We watched some Cars, and he started telling me his favorite lines before they happened. I couldn’t believe it. As we were going to bed, I told him about the fun weekend we were going to have, and that Grandma and Grandpa were going to come up the next day. When Brendan woke up the next morning, the first words out of his mouth were, “I wanna see Mum” (‘Mum’ is his current word for all Grandmas and Grandpas). He repeated it, and then pointed to the room where they stay when they’re here and said, “sleeping”. We went in to check as I explained that they weren’t here yet, but would be coming very soon.

They arrived with much fanfare from both boy and dog. Then they came in and did their Grandma and Grandpa thing where they sprinkle love and food and flowers and gifts all over our house. Dinner was freshly baked bread, with corned beef and veggies for St. Patrick’s Day – and Leprechaun pie for dessert. Mmmmmmmm… one of my absolute all time favorite meals. I shared a tiny bit with everyone else, but ate way more than my fair share. And to totally fess up, I did not share even one piece of pie with ANYONE. But I did at least go through the motions of making an offer to share. I didn’t feel the need to ask more than once – but I did ask once. I’m a giver.

Grandma and Grandpa were amazed at how much he has changed in just a few weeks. Words are popping out everywhere. He does make liberal use of the word, ‘mine’, but he has started saying ‘m-mm’ rather than ‘NO!’ a lot of the time, which does soften the blow. He’s got some other new gems in there. Some of my favorites are ‘something happened’ which is a very useful phrase for nearly every situation, such as when your cracker breaks in half. He even knows what a burp is, and thinks its funny when he does one (in case I was wondering whether or not I had a boy in the house). Last night as we were reading a book with Grandma and Grandpa, he told us that there was a ‘frog hiding’, and then on the next page that ‘frog swimming in water’. I’ll just stop here, because I think I’ve once again made it clear that he is a genius.

This weekend he also started really jumping – and today he caught his first ball. And then did it again a whole bunch of times so that Mommy could take a video.

(just for the record, it was actually Mommy that discovered he could catch, after a good 20 minutes of playing tackle football). There is another catch video here, and a long video of jumping and dunking and throwing the ball ‘up pie’ here.  Please forgive Mommy’s loud cheering.

How does it just keep getting better? I don’t understand how it’s possible. Today I had one short moment of clutter claustrophobia. I looked around at all the stuff that seems to accumulate faster than we can walk through a room, and wondered how I would ever catch up. It didn’t take me more than a few minutes to realize that soon Brendan would be more interested in playing with his toys, or hanging out with his friends, or going on his first date. And at that point, I can clean my house, or do any of the unimportant things that sometimes feel overwhelming when I have a toddler clamoring for my attention. I left the clutter alone and went out to blow bubbles and jump and play more football.  Now is the time to eat dessert first, because this dessert won’t last – and it’s even better than Leprechaun pie.

    Leprechaun pie includes…leprechauns?
I loved the video of him romping, and that Chelsea still gets ball time…and Brendan time.

Leprechaun pie is made with real leprechauns. Sometimes their tiny boots get stuck between your teeth. (actually, it’s similar to grasshopper pie). Chelsea gets A LOT of Brendan time. And a little 1:1 time with either me or daddy each morning to preserve her patience and remind her that she is still our first born.
