What we learned today

Today was a big day. While yesterday held the first pool swim, today was the first day at the beach. A big day – because what could be better than the beach? We were prepared. We had tiny sandals in case the sand was hot on little feet, we had a nice floppy hat with chin strap to keep the sun from getting anywhere it shouldn’t, we had asked the doctor if it’s dangerous for a baby to put sand in his mouth. We even got down to the beach bright and early to stake our claim under the best yellow umbrella on the whole beach. I got the camera ready, and prepared for happy tears. There were tears alright – but not the kind I expected. Today we learned that our baby is not quite ready for the beach. He cried the moment his toes hit the sand – and it didn’t get any better when daddy showed him how fun it was to run his fingers through it. He cried when he dipped his toes into his first ocean waters. So Mommy and Daddy hightailed it right out of there. Because it turns out that if Brendan doesn’t think the beach his fun, than neither do we. So we went to the kiddy pool and spent a good hour splashing around and making friends – and then another wonderful hour or so on the lounge chairs with the breeze gently blowing, and Brendan curled up asleep on my chest.

He wasn’t quite himself today. That top tooth is coming in, and the hole it is making in his gums makes his Mama weak in the knees. I know everybody who has teeth has to go through it, but it looks like it really really hurts. I don’t like it. And at least I can take comfort in the fact that I have never met a single person who remembers teething. So we took it a little easy today. After nap time, the three of us went out exploring. We drove past beautiful beaches, and stopped at the prettiest most sparkly one to have baja fish tacos out of another food truck. It was awesome. Until the police man almost gave us a ticket for illeagly parking. Mommy gave her best doe eyes and said we didn’t realize we couldn’t park there (we really didn’t) and the nice police man went with the spirit of aloha and decided to just tell me to move the minivan immediately. Mahalo very much mister police man. After that we stopped by a bakery and a local fruit stand, got some shaved ice and headed back to have a light dinner, watch the sunset, and see the flame twirling Hawaiian man. What Brendan lacks in his love for the beach, he makes up for in his love for flame twirling Hawaiian men.

Grandma and Grandpa wanted to watch “The Apprentice” tonight, so we put Brendan to bed, and then they agreed to babysit while Rob and I wandered around and had some drinks and snacks at the fancy hotel lounge. It was a lovely day. And thank goodness it was only day two of vacation. We’re still in that time where we have days of fun stretching out ahead of us. I hope that tooth hurries up and finishes poking through. In the meantime, we’re enjoying plenty of fruity popcicles, and hard biscuits, and no more beaches – and anything else that will help ease the pain. It was a wonderful first mothers day, but then again, I feel like the luckiest mother in the world every day of the year.
