Rain

Rob just called to tell me that he isn’t even on the freeway yet, even though he left 15 minutes ago. The baby is asleep, so I’m just going to wait it out a bit. I should take this opportunity to clean up the piles of, well, everything that are around our house right now – but instead I made a cup of coffee and sat down at the computer.

This morning we woke up to the first rain of the season. It rained pretty hard all night, so there were some nice puddles around, and you could hear the car tires splashing water as they drove by. There is a book The Peanut and I read quite often called “I Am a Bunny”. Recently, we have focused on these pages.

When he sees this one, he points to the fall leaves on his mobile, and then at the leaves in the book – and gives Mama a big smile.

Then on this page, we point to the blanket that the bunny is all curled up with, and then we point to the blanket that Brendan is all curled up with – and again, a very pleased smile.

I took Brendan downstairs and we sat by the window and looked outside at the big raindrops on the windows, and the rain still falling. He was taking it all in and then pointed and said, “WaWa” (water). Such a smart boy. Then I went and got his book, and we looked at this page:

And he got it. Then I took him outside still in his sleeper, so he could feel the rain. I don’t know what Mama was thinking, but that clearly was not enough. So we got all bundled up and went outside to enjoy. He couldn’t stop looking at his boots.

But it didn’t take long.

And those little boots that he’s wearing – those were purchased long before Brendan was born – long before I had even met Rob – by a girl and her mother who loved to do “puddle dances” together, and dreamed of someday having a little person to share the fun with. Who knew that they would fit *perfectly* on the first day we were ready to use them? And who knew that they would have his initials on the side?

As if we needed more proof that all of this is meant to be.
