the best age

Last week wasn’t my favorite. I wasn’t cuddle up with a book sick, I was sleep all day sick. It felt like a waste of a week. But I’m better now, and can see that there were still a few bright spots, and apparently some good opportunities for learning to do important things:

And now, magically, Brendan is 19 months old. He is steaming toward two and I can’t believe it. He just continues to get better and better though, which makes it a little easier to leave behind my previous favorite ages.

His body is starting to look like a boy, rather than a little lump of a baby. He’s got shoulders, and calves – but thankfully still a little chub in his thighs. He has started saying, “Chelsea” in addition to “puppy”. He says, “I see” (I want to see) when he wants to look at something particular. Daddy was feeling under the weather this weekend, so Brendan and I went on a date to Target. He could not have been a more delightful shopping partner. He sat in the cart and helped me pick things out – I would ask him what we needed to get next and he would say, “Ummmmm…..” and then we would laugh together and he would throw his arms around me and pull me in close for a hug. People smiled at us and we smiled right back at them, because that’s what happens when you are brimming over with happiness.

The hugging is my favorite. Just in case I haven’t made that clear. He does it with so much purpose and love. The other night he was clearly tired, but didn’t want to get in bed even after our usual book/singing routine. I’d put him in the crib, and he’d immediately roll over and put his arms up to be lifted out. I picked him up and he wrapped his arms and legs so tightly around me and nuzzled his little face right into my neck. That was one of my favorite parts of infant Brendan, but it’s even better now that he chooses to do it. It heals any ailment. This morning he was pointing to various boo-boo’s so that I would kiss them, and then he pointed to my arm where he had apparently decided I had a boo-boo. Then he kissed it for me. And you know what? It felt so much better.

This weekend we finally took him to ride the train at our local mall. I don’t know why they have a train at this tiny mall, but they do – and we are so happy about it. Please enjoy this virtual shopping tour where you can scout out the best sales from the privacy of your own home:

I take so many little videos of Brendan. Most of them fit only for Mommys and Grandmas. This one ranks in that category but I’m posting it anyway because I love the concentration on his face as he does this task he has assigned himself. It is such a joy to me, to watch him in action – to see what kinds of things capture his attention and what kinds of decisions he makes.

Just so it doesn’t appear that I always gaze at him through rose colored glasses, I will admit that there are times, as we speed toward two, that those decisions are very resolute, some might even call them tantrums. Last night on the way home, my boy who loves to say, “Yeah” to everything spent a good portion of the ride saying (with feeling) “Nnnnnnnnnnno!” to nothing in particular. I just haven’t yet been inspired to capture these events on film. Yet.

Happy 19 months, little man.
