Summer

Recently, Brendan has been trying on our flip flops, so I went ahead and sprung for a pair that would fit him. He was thrilled, and immediately asked all of us to put on our flip flops on so we could go for a walk.

My flip flops brought to you by payless shoe source – I brought them to Iowa with me about three years ago. I can remember feeling like I didn’t want to wear them while I was holding the baby, but I do remember throwing them on for one of my roughly 24 trips a day down to the lobby for the 24 hour a day free coffee. It was damn good coffee. Brendan’s flip flops have surfboards on them. He really likes surfboards lately – and in fact, I “tricked” him into wearing pants that were not “soft pants” (sweatpants) by getting him a pair of skater/surfer pants (pictured below). They still have a knit waistband, and a silky lining like sweatpants, but that didn’t prevent some initial tears and struggles in order to get them on the first time.

Then Daddy joined us, but Daddy doesn’t like his toes.

We started out on our walk, and realized that just like riding a bike or a scooter, flip flops require a little practice.

and a little more practice…

And then he got a better idea:

Today is July 4th and we finally made our first visit to the Novato Pancake Breakfast and Parade. We got there plenty early, and it was a good thing – the place was packed by the time the parade started! Clo the Cow from a local creamery was there and Brendan really loved her. Four college aged kids asked if they could sit at our table – two of them were from Oklahoma and two of them were from Arkansas – they were students at the local seminary school. You could tell they weren’t from around here because when a volunteer came over to ask if she could clear their plates they very politely called her “M’am” and made eye contact with her. The accents were also a pretty good clue. Brendan provided the entertainment for these four while they ate. He told them he had a puppy named Chelsea, but that sometimes we called her “poochie”, “poocharoo” or “pup-pup”. He told them about his school and how he is a shark now. He pointed out the “pretty flowers” on the paper cups that held the juice, and told them that his Mommy likes flowers and hearts. They were such sweet kids, and Rob and I wanted to take all four of them home to our house.

While the three’s come with some challenges, it is now far easier to walk around in a crowded public event with Brendan. He stayed right with us and was a complete delight. I let him know that it was so fun to get to do these things with my two best friends. He told me, “you’re my best friend too.”

We learned that some people put their chairs out the night before to get front row seats in the choice spots. We didn’t do that, in fact we didn’t even bring chairs – but we found a nice spot on the curb to camp out and watch with our kettle korn. Before too long, the people in the chairs in front of us scooted over and told us they had two chairs they weren’t using. Soon after that the people they were with who were sitting directly in front of us, insisted on putting us in the front row. We tried to refuse, but they insisted. Then they handed Brendan a squirt bottle to help ‘cool off’ the parade participants. They’ve been going for years and have their routine down. They even invited us back to the same spot next year. Next time, I’ll bring the chocolate cookies. It was awesome – a lot of the people in the parade give out all kinds of goodies (patriotic stamps, candy, stickers, rubber duckies – even popsicles!) and I think Brendan got one of everything. Pays to have a cute kid.

It was an awesome hometown parade, although not nearly enough bands. I told Rob that next year I was going to organize a toddler kazoo marching band. He pointed out some potential hurdles with that plan, so maybe I’ll open it up to any age. Register with me if you’d like to participate.

Brendan passed out on the 5 minute drive home, and now Grandma and Grandpa are on their way up for a spur of the moment BBQ. We’re going to play some bocce ball, lawn bowling, and see what happens when you tug on these long strings…

If you don’t have any plans, come on over to our Happy Birthday America party.
