Dinner Party

This Saturday was Uncle Frank’s birthday, and we were invited over to their house for dinner. This is exciting not only because we were honored they wanted to spend the evening with us – but also because Auntie Jess is such a great cook! We don’t get to see them as often as we used to – turns out time is short with a toddler. Too much to do, and early bed times mean we aren’t quite as portable as we used to be.

We had our usual awesome time with them – but this time there was a small person roaming around looking for mischief. As we neared the end of the night, Brendan started to get sleepy. We propped him in a cozy chair with his blanket and a bottle, and he watched the twinkly lights as he wound down for the evening. He didn’t go to sleep, mind you – he didn’t want to miss anything. But when we bundled him up and got him settled into his car seat, he was asleep before we pulled away.

I can remember that feeling. Going to an event with my parents, feeling like one of the grown-ups, staying up past my bed time. I remember hearing the sounds of laughter and fun fading into the background as I tried my best to fight off sleep from a nearby couch. I remember the feeling of serenity riding along in the back seat, and only waking enough to realize we were home as my Dad snuggled me into bed. Brendan may be too young to really remember these events, but I hope those feelings of contentment are already sinking in.
