True Romance

Eight years ago on memorial day, Rob and I were married. This weekend, as we have done so many times through the years, we went back to the hotel where our wedding party stayed – The Cypress Hotel. It was a last minute decision, which meant I didn’t waste extra time ‘planning’ and just quickly packed up the things we needed. We were hoping for pool time, but the weather wasn’t quite warm enough to persuade us, so did other fun things. We ate at Chili’s where Brendan convinced the nice lady to give him a total of three balloons. We went to a giant mall and did things that I have never done at a mall before – like look at Radio Shack:

And rent a stroller:

(pay no attention to Mommy’s comment about the race car – we ditched the more manageable single stroller race car, and went for the double-decker fire truck, ensuring that it would be nearly impossible for Mommy to navigate the racks in any mall clothing store. Brendan spent time in both seats before deciding he would rather cruise the mall on foot.)

We watched sunsets, spent a lot of time by the great big fountain, visited the goldfish at the front desk, scooped up dirt with the tiny toy excavator the hotel gave Brendan, got extra cream cheese on our bagels at breakfast, and ordered kids temperature steamed milk from Starbucks. At night, Brendan enjoyed his bottle in Mommy and Daddy’s bed, and then went to his own bed less than 6 feet away. He enjoyed this very much – particularly in the morning when he would wake up and start laughing when he realized he could see us sleeping. At The Cypress, Rob and I usually watch all of the movie trailers offered on the hotel TV, and then pick the one that sounds like it will go best with popcorn in bed. With Brendan in the room, this tradition was out of the question. As was the wine hour each night where we used to relax on the big cushy chairs in the lobby and dream about our future. But we came up with something that merged all these traditions together. We brought some wine and cheese and an assortment of cookies back to the room, and Rob found us a movie on his ipad. We watched it in bed with two pairs of headphones and the lights out as we snacked on our goodies.

This trip was nothing like our traditional anniversary Cypress stay. And of course, it was the best one yet.

Brendan really wanted to throw rocks into the fountains. I’ll admit, we let him throw a couple in there – but in an effort to distract him from rocks, I offered him a penny. I told him that when you throw a penny into the fountain, you get to make a wish. I said he should close his eyes, think of something that he wants very much, and then throw the penny into the water. He scrunched his little eyes shut and then tossed in the penny. I don’t know what he wished for, but I know that when it was Mommy’s turn, my only wish was for Brendan and Daddy to have their wishes come true. I already have everything I ever wanted.

At least I thought I did, but then on the way home, we saw this – so now I’m complete.

So perfect!! And the boy legitimately seems to like motorized vehicles.

You offered him sweet dollies rejected for unknown reasons, right? And he has a blanket and a bunny.

I love this life, and the happy exclamation points.
