Happy Thanksgiving

This is either exactly the right thing, or exactly the wrong thing to be posting on Thanksgiving:

I have so much to be thankful for – all I need, really. A generous roof over my head, superfluous food to eat, health, perspective to appreciate the little things most days… I have a 10 year marriage that continues to grow with a partner whom I would choose all over again, and I have a son who has always held my whole heart in his – and always will. Most important to me, especially this year, the health and happiness of the ones I hold most dear – my entire family from Cupertino to Peabody to Eldora. I don’t need another thing, I only need to give more from my abundance.

And of course, I’m thankful for piles of leaves:

And snuggly brown dogs:

Fall Collection

Life has taken many twists and turns in the past months, and I haven’t been as good at recording all the things I never want to forget. This is just another don’t forget collection – like a little string tied around my finger.

He has so much to say these days – opinions on everything – in fact one night when I was trying to coax him to sleep he told me, “Mama I can’t have a quiet voice – I have too many questions!”. How do you say no to that? Brendan really likes the Mister Peabody and Sherman movie (love hearing him talk about George Washington, King Tut and The Trojan Horse) and he has now decided that he wants to be “a genius”. He has also taken to brushing his hair or ‘making himself handsome’ as he says, and when Mommy came in to stroke his hair and I always do he told me, “Mommy – you’re breaking up my work!”. He has also asked me at night as I snuggle in close, “Mommy – please don’t make my blanket hot.”.

There have been the quotes that still my heart – sometimes he tells me out of the clear blue, “Mommy – I love you so much”. There was the night his tummy hurt in the middle of the night. We sat in the bathroom together – he didn’t want to sit on the potty, but I sat on a little stool in the bathroom with him and he climbed right in for a nice extended hug. At a certain point Daddy came in to make sure we were okay and to take a turn – Brendan said, “Daddy – we already have the hugging spot set up for you!”. As a flashback to infant days, it turned out just to be some gas pains I think – but the next morning Brendan told Daddy, “When Mommy loves me it feels better”. Daddy said, ‘What about when Daddy loves you?’ and Brendan said, Yeah – that too”.

And now for the quote he will love when he’s in highschool…. he saw one of my bras sitting on the floor in my closet and he said, “oh mommy! it’s broken!” not knowing what he was looking at I asked what was broken and he said, “Your booby dress-up!”. So there you have it.

Back to his genius tendencies, Brendan has started tracing letters – both with a pen, and an iphone:

Plus he’s very snuggly:

Daddy was looking at electric cars, and Brendan and I played McDonalds with this toy in the Toyota dealership for at least 45 minutes. It’s hard not to put one on our Christmas list:

He tells great stories – sometimes the characters are played by his toes:

This weekend he has had croup – luckily so far we have avoided being anywhere near to an emergency room visit – but we have had to devise cleaver ways to keep an active boy from running. This one worked better than anything:

It has also meant late night rides in the wagon to get that cold wet air into his lungs. I told daddy that next I want him to bundle me up and take me for a ride in the wagon – doesn’t it look cozy?

It also meant that we missed a birthday party he was very much looking forward to. Mommy tried to soften the blow a bit with a quick cake.

No rain, no rainbows…
I hope that Brendan can always help us find the rainbows on any rainy day.

Even the butterflies

Many things happened this past week that I don’t want to forget, but tonight Brendan didn’t get to sleep until almost 11:00. He was being a good boy, he just wasn’t tired. I think we’re close to saying goodbye to naps. At one point I asked him if he had something on his mind – if there was anything he was thinking about as he tried to get to sleep – he said, “yep – the future.” It was my favorite moment in the course of the 2.5 hour bedtime. I want to say that this proves once again that he is my son (Rob laughs when I say that when I was a little girl I would get myself to sleep by trying to picture the reaches of time and space) but really, I think it’s because we watched Mr. Peabody and Sherman, and the time machine spurred exploration of the past, the present and the future. Finally he and Mommy got into Mommy and Daddy’s bed, and a few minutes later he fell asleep holding my hand.

All this to say that tonight’s update will be short, but there is one thing I’m posting just for Creek Grandma who isn’t feeling so hot right now. Daddy and Brendan were finishing up a scooter/bike ride, and as they got closer to our house they spotted a butterfly. They stopped to notice, as we always do – but this time instead of flying away, the butterfly flew closer – to a pretty purple flower right by Brendan. The butterfly flew away – and then he came back. According to Rob, this happened several times – to different places, all right beside them. One time he even landed right on Brendan’s head. When they came home and told me about it, I explained to Brendan that it was very special – that butterflies know the truth about people, and that clearly this one knew how very special he is. Rob got several pictures which some day I will pry off his phone, but for tonight, I did nag him enough to get this one video extracted.

Candy

This is the haul we ended up with, sorted by type. There would have been more, but when Brendan and Daddy went out for round two, some of the houses had run out of candy, soOne can viagra sales on line satisfy their partner for around six hours. It’s a bird, it’s a plane…

Well, he’s done it again. Brendan came up with exactly what he wanted to be for Halloween. “Clark Kent Superman.” We talked about what we needed to pull together for the costume ready and he told me, “Mom – we just need the details.”. Here’s how it all came together.

He was so pleased with it. We all were. He told everyone who asked that he was going to be “Clark Kent Superman”. But when it came time to put on his costume, he made a last minute swap – just like he did last year. So here is how we left the house to go trick-or-treating:

We had a great time – he loved Halloween this year. He enjoyed going from house to house, and interacting with all the kids – and I loved watching him choose candy when he had absolutely no idea what he was picking. It wasn’t until we got home and he said, “lets find matches and then eat all of it!” (which is exactly what I used to do… group everything together) that I realized that he was picking any candy with blue on it. We got a lot of Nestle Crunch and Almond Joy.

He also really loved handing out candy to the 300+ kids who came to our house. Whenever someone walked up he would run over and dutifully put the candy right into their bucket for them. Like it was his job. In fact, if he was somewhere else when people walked up, he would run over yelling, “Customers!!!!!!” Uncle Frank, Auntie Jess, Baby Scarlett and Scarlett’s Grandma and Grandpa also came up for the evening – along with Gabe and Jack. We did make one other spur of the moment costume change…

Because why not.

Brendan and I played hookie from school/work today so we could enjoy the holiday. It was a perfect rainy fall Halloween day – and for the first time ever, Brendan really helped me make cookies. Rob looked up at me and said, “you’re in heaven, aren’t you.” Yep. I didn’t even mind that he took pictures of me in my pj’s with not even vaguely cute bed head.

I guess I also forgot to mention that we went to a pumpkin festival last week. His favorite parts were the huuuuuge pumpkins, and the most awesome face painter EVER:

And then there was the imagination parade at school. We were very fortunate that Grandma and Grandpa came up to join us. They were almost late getting there and Brendan was very concerned that Grandma and Grandpa might not make it – but he was so happy when they did. He even broke rank to come and give them a quick hug. Those hand you see outstretched are Grandma’s, and that smile is just for his Grandparents. (they were turtles…)

Lots of Halloweening. And lots of other fun mixed in, like the Giants winning the World Series for the second time in Brendan’s young life (clearly he is their good luck charm), and Harper’s Mommy and I taking the kids on a lunch date:

It’s just now starting to feel like Fall around here, and this has been the perfect start. My main goal: keep it as slow and relaxing as possible. That means more hookie days.

Eleventeen

Brendan is becoming quite the counter. He does One – Two – Three – very deliberately all the way up to Ten. Then it turns into – Ten – Eleven – Twelve – Thirteen – Fourteen – Eleventeen – Eighteen – Eleventeen – Eighteen… and so on until he is “done” counting. Eleventeen is my new favorite number. He is also consistently recognizing the letters “B”, “G”, “O” and “M” as well as the number “3”. The kid is a genius.

On Friday, Brendan and I went bowling.

He loved it. Brendan (and everyone else) would cheer like crazy when the ball reached the end of the lane – even if the ball was in the gutter. Then they put the gutter rails up for him and that’s when things really got crazy. If you’ve got a spare 10-15 minutes, I’ll show you:

My favorite part was what happened off camera, Brendan would circle around high fiving everyone like he had just won the world series. People ate it up. And gave him many fries and chicken fingers. Such a fun date.

Perhaps it was the bowling, or the Frozen Face Paint:

(also in place to enhance his face for the bowling experience) but this past weekend, Brendan really cranked his energy level up to elevnteen. This seems to happen from time to time, perhaps during growth spurts, but Rob and I always wonder if it will become the new norm. And let me tell you, we were exhausted. I’m happy to say that we are back to normal now – and he seems to be even sweeter than ever. When I went to visit at work, his teachers had glowing reports of kindness and good choices – and then while I was on the playground, one of his friends threw some tanbark at me. And look out – Brendan immediately went over waving his hands out in front of him and said, “Back up – back up – it is NOT okay to throw things at my Mommy!”. When he decided I was safe, he ran at lightning speed to the nearest teacher to report the crime. I assured everyone I would be okay, but it was nice to feel so protected. We tell stories every day. Many, many stories – it’s the first thing he asks for whenever we’re still for more than a moment. And lots of our stories are about superheroes (especially one named Brendan) – and how it’s great when they make good choices and help people, but it’s really unbelievably amazing when the superheroes can help the bad buys learn to be good guys – and how the best way to do that is by being kind and showing them that there is a better way to do things. Well, after the perp threw the tanbark at Mommy, he asked Brendan (more like demanded…) to play ball with us. I watched Brendan carefully. At first he looked at me with a sad face and said, “NO!” but then he turned back to the friend and said, “Okay – sure you can – I have an idea – you kick it to me, and I’ll kick it to Mommy”. So proud. Many a Mommy hug was given on that day, I can assure you. And like a cherry on top, that night I got asked to snuggle on the couch with him. We’ve taken the love straight up to at least eleventeen if not twelveteen.

Speaking of proud, I also have to share the best pumpkin drawings I’ve ever seen:

If you can believe it, there is more wonder. Brendan found golden treasure.
I’d tell you about it, but it’s better in his own words:

Boys

Boys are awesome.
Especially this one.

Brendan wanted to play with his little fishing set, and it was 90 degrees outside, so I set out a pan of water for him to fish. Before we knew it, Brendan was stripping his clothes off and Daddy said, “Ummmmm… why are you taking your pants off?” Brendan said, “Cause I’m goin’ in!”

All dressed up for Giants Spirit Day at school (Go Giants!), dancing in the parking lot while swinging his monkey (George).

Boyhood perfection.

We went to a local carnival at a local school – 25 cent tickets that bought you such fun as jumpy house, a cake walk, a chance to win a fish (we tried MANY times with no luck), bean bag toss – and of course, a balloon sword. More perfection.

Teacher Rachael put a rainbow on his arm! Apparently this happens on Fridays – next Friday, Mommy is gonna show up. Cause I want my rainbow.

And of course… baseball.

Today his class was discussing what they should do during ‘circle time’. His teacher told me that Brendan’s suggestion was, “We could sing ‘You Are My Sunshine’ for my Mommy!”. He also couldn’t wait to tell me that he had collected some leaves in his cubby for me. I love that he knows I love these things.

I have to go out of town tomorrow morning. I’ll be away one night. And it’s too much.
There are not enough hours in the day, days in the week, weeks in the year, years in my life to spend with Brendan. I love him, and I love everything about him. My heart still has growing pains each days as it grows to fit my ever expanding love for that boy.

Pumpkins

Each year we excitedly bring Brendan to the pumpkin patch, and each year he is underwhelmed. Last year he was at least excited about the jumpy house, but the pumpkins still held little appeal. This year we tried again. It was Scarlett’s first pumpkin patch date, so we invited she and her mommy and daddy up to our house to share a little pre-patch breakfast and playtime. (By the way, AWESOME and easy baked french toast recipe.) Scarlett was in love with Brendan, and he did a good job showing her around and sharing his toys (and his old highchair!).

Then we headed up to get our pumpkin on – and this year, he totally got it. In fact, he loved every single thing about it. He loved the pumpkins,

he loved the corn maze,

he loved the hay tower,

he loved the animals,

he loved seeing some of his friends there

he loved the corn pit – and he even loved collecting the corn that was scattered around everywhere like pixie dust. (he even shared a few kernels with some nice ladies who stopped to admire his collection.

He chose the first pumpkin he saw, and pretty much the next 10 or so, but then he realized there was a whole field of them to choose from and became more discerning. I loved being able to ask him about what kind of pumpkin he was looking for, and what kind of face he might like to carve. I loved watching him explore and seeing that like his mama, often he picked the ones that had something special about them – something that might make others think they were less than “perfect”.

Today he really wanted to carve a pumpkin, and you know what? Why not! Brendan showed us a few possible pumpkin faces:

So we carved the first one that we got last weekend at the overpriced lot by the freeway. Holy cow, they practically charged you to even look at the pumpkins. They had a good jumpy house though:

Brendan said he wanted “a happy face that was looking up” and luckily, daddy was there to help us. So I present to you, our first carved pumpkin of the season:

Chelsea is guarding the rest of them.

Collection

I have not been posting, but I have been collecting. So right now I’m just going to dump a lot of treasures out of my pocket so I have more room to collect this weekend:

I don’t think I ever shared this video of B talking to Buzz right before we left for Hawaii:

Or this one of Brendan counting with Aunt Faren:

He is very observant. He remembers locations and exactly what we did where – when we saw the parade, where the ice cream store is… it always amazes me. He also strings together very logical conclusions from what he knows. For instance, we planted a couple potatoes in water to watch them sprout and grow. He found one in our pantry that had been there a little too long, and got out a cup of water and put it right in.

He is also doing some dog training:

Sometimes in Mommy’s shoes:

Some favorite quotes:
“Those flowers are gimantic!”
“My nose was fluffy, but then I got a tissue and it feels better!”

Friends from work:

This was the day he got himself dressed all by himself – he picked out the clothes, and put them all on. My big boy! He also likes to brush his teeth. Mainly so he can practice spitting.

More favorite Quotes:

Love is all around us. Even (especially?) in onions:

Yes, we are still doing the ice bucket challenge:

And here are some attractive pictures of Mommy. I got an accidental head butt from some aggressive snuggling with my son. I have to admit, I think the shiner made me look awesome. Mysterious. There isn’t one part of my life where a black eye is expected. A Mom grocery shopping with a black eye? An IS manager with a black eye? I think it was the perfect accessory to every outfit. It left people guessing. I told them that I wouldn’t let Rob have pizza for dinner one night and he got mad. But alas, it’s gone now.

Dancing

Rob and his Mom danced to the song, “I Hope You Dance” at our wedding. So I’ve always liked the song, but after becoming a mother, it hits me right where it counts. Definitely in a literal sense – I find that although I’m not much of a “public” dancer anymore, I’m the first one out there to dance with my son anywhere and anytime the opportunity arises – parades, farmers markets, the living room… but I also realize that it’s a figurative philosophy that I hope my son will embrace. This past week, we danced.

After 14 years at Lucasfilm, Rob accepted a job that was the right fit at the right time. And when something is the right fit at the right time, things tend to move pretty quickly. He actually received the offer while we were visiting Disneyworld. To be exact, the call came as we were waiting in line for Peter Pan. Big things tend to happen when we visit Mickey’s house. Rob came back to Lucas for 2 weeks, then had 2 weeks off before starting his new job this past Monday. He made a list of things to do – some chores to get done, a few daytime activities sprinkled in for fun. But the reality was that Lucas paid him out for the 6 weeks of vacation time that he would never have the opportunity to take. This hit home for me. There is no amount of money more precious than time – especially vacation time. So I did a complete role reversal – I told my list making, over and advanced planning self to pipe down, and suggested that we head to Hawaii. Even though we had *just* gotten back from two trips. Even though there were many practical reasons not to go. And uppon declaration, that right fit at the right time thing happened, and all the pieces fell into place. I packed for both me and Brendan in an hour and a half, people. That just doesn’t happen.

And I don’t know if this is what happens to you spontaneous people, but it was so awesome. For one week we wore nothing but swimsuits and flipflops. I actually got a shoulder strain from my arms dangling over the inner tube in the lazy river. Sad story, I know. (side note: I had NO idea that was how you spelled “inner tube”). We were just together. With no plans other than whether to hit the pool or the beach – no schedule to keep other than trying to catch every sunset.

It was the first time that Brendan cried when it was time to go home.

Here are some of the things we miss:

1. The sound that tells you the menehune in the splashy area are about to tip the canoe
2. The lazy, and often not so lazy, river

3. Mickey ice cream sandwich and ‘looking in the holes’ on the way up to bed
4. The mist and sound of the falling water in our pool chairs

5. Tuna sandwiches, chips and soda on our balcony at lunch, and wine and cheese on the balcony at night.

photos and fun

Life has kept a hectic pace recently – thankfully most of the busy has been FUN busy. It’s been one of those summers that goes by in the blink of an eye. We didn’t do all the things on the fun list, but we did things I hadn’t even thought to put on the list. Here are a few things I nearly forgot to remember:

– We had more fun at with the uncles including big trains, little train rides and fast pony rides in the park right by their house:

– And waves at Santa Monica Pier:

– And making friends with babies in the airport:

– Brendan explained that he wanted to do a family movie night. I told him that we he could just watch a little bit of movie while he had his dinner and he said “no – I want a family movie night!” I asked what made it a family movie night and he said, “when it’s special.” Apparently special means when Mommy makes popcorn and snacks and puts them on a tray with fun napkins for us to eat on the couch. He is a boy after my own heart. If we do something fun one time, why not make it a tradition?

– I nearly forgot to post these picture of Grandma and Grandpa visiting. We had a fun time including a three generation haircut (including the first haircut my dad has gotten from someone other than Mom in about 50 years)

– And a special surprise – Grandma had made Brendan his very own Music Man costume. Brendan had a fever during these pictures, so he looks a little subdued, but he feels very special when he wears this. Grandma is talented. Please don’t compare this to my Kristoff costume.
Cultures Throughout the ages, the pomegranate has a rich source viagra generic usa of phytochemical compounds,it has high levels of flavonoids and polyphenols, potent antioxidants that help fight against heart disease and cancer. – We had dinner out at a restaurant one night and since we had some leftovers, we got a to go box. Daddy made the to go box talk and it was pretty funny. Toward the end of dinner, a beautiful sunset began to unfold. As we all looked at it, Brendan asked that we turn the to-go box around so the to go box could see the sunset too.

– Both capturing and being caught capturing Brendan singing “Let It Go”. Still one of his most requested songs:

– Asking Brendan what Daddy was doing, and Brendan telling me that he was “lumping around”.

– Tonight I was nibbling his toes and asked if he thought they would give me strong muscles. He said, “Nooo.. they don’t give you strong muscles, they give you germs.”

– And my favorite – we have really been into Peter Pan recently, and one night when Daddy was putting Brendan to bed, in the quiet of the room Brendan said, “Daddy – will you take me to Neverland?”

– The pooch has also been having a nice summer with several stays at Camp Casler and lots of paper towel roles to chew.

We extended our vacation a bit by heading down for a double header of Uncle Visiting and Wedding Celebrating. It was a few days filled with nothing but fun. Including lots of acrobatics:

And a really awesome wedding:

With all this travel, Brendan has done a fantastic job of going with the flow – but we’re all ready to spend a few weekends at home. B even celebrated with a poop in the potty at school yesterday. And there was much rejoicing – even by Brendan. Hooray!!!!

Disneyworld

After a long day of travel, we’re back from 9 days in Disneyworld. It was another amazing trip – and rather than unpacking and putting the house back together, I’ve decided to soak in my memories a bit while they are still so fresh. We didn’t bring a computer with us, and most of our time was spent in the parks, in the pools or sleeping – but I did manage to keep a list of some of my favorite moments. So in no particular order, here is a snapshot of our vacation:

1. Picking  Brendan  up,  his eyes meet my  eyes,  he makes  the  connection  and  yells  ‘I’m  going  to  mickeys   house!!  All of his friends line up to hug him goodbye.
2. Soooo  good  on  plane!  Nap,  movie  (I  read  a  magazine!)  snacks
3. “Mom  want  to  look  out  the  window  with  me?”   (Puts  his  arm  around  me  and  shows me the lights)
4. Spending the first night at the hotel  at  the  airport  with  a  view  of  the  runway

5. Going  to  look  at  the  airport pool  at  midnight
6. Watching  him  truly  help  us by pushing  the  stroller  and  bag
7. Going  to  sleep  in  same  room  the first night of vacation
8. The  start  of  vacation  -  very  first  day  – with everything ahead of us
9. B  wanting  all  of  us  to  hold  hands
10. Getting  a  little  shy  in  airport  and  clinging  to  mommy  after  his  short  car  nap.
11. Brendan  going  down  the  staircase  to the breakfast buffet saying ‘I’ll  be  Elsa,  you  be  Anna’ and realizing I will sing in public if my son asks me too. (softly)
12. Seeing  the  cousins  for  the  first  time
13. Champagne  at  checkin  on  the club  level.

14. Evening  swim  in  pool.  And  Brendan deciding he wants to go  down  the  BIG  (250 foot!) water  slide  -  twice!!
15. Cousins  entertaining  each  other  at  Via  Napoli.

16. B  wanting  to  get  in  the  shark  mouth just like he did last year

19. Changing  our  plans completely but  realizing  it’s  all  fun  no matter what we do.

20. Watching  b  walk  up  to  have  a  talk  with  uncle  Steve.

21. Meeting Mickey, Minnie and Pluto – and watching  the older couple  clearly from someplace far away, all by themselves and with no children, truly  excited  to  meet  Mickey and get his autograph.

22.  B  sleeping  12  hours.  And  waking  up  saying  he  wanted  to  ride  the  race  cars, then go to  the pool.

97. Brendan hearing the theme from Superman at MGM and striking an appropriate pose.

98. Catching the show they did on the castle where Mickey scares away the bad guys and nightmares by getting everyone to chant “Dreams come true… Dreams come true…” Brendan asking a lot of questions about it and then hearing him say, “Dreams come true!” so many times after that.
99. Asking, ‘how much do you love mommy?’ and getting this response:

100. Family moments.

It was a great vacation. Here are some things I will remember for the next trip:
– Wicking. It’s hot there. Nobody cares about your cute outfit – just keep cool and try not to sweat more than you have to.
– Don’t over plan. There is so much fun to be had – but the best moments happen in the space between, just like at home.
– No matter how great is is to be on vacation, it’s always so nice to be home. Especially in your own bed.

Mom – I think there may be a few more pictures here.

Challenges

Three. Oh my goodness three. There was a moment last week where I feared I might not be able to blog again until he is four. Not because there aren’t a million things to remember but because it takes all my faculties to be mom to a three year old. Rob and I have commented that things seem either a lot easier or a lot harder, and last week they weighted more toward the latter. I’m convinced that three is the gateway to personhood. Someone in Rob’s home community started a special way to spread awareness about ALS, and Daddy (and Brendan) rose to the challenge:

We finish each others…

You know when there is a trend that is sweeping the nation? It could be a book, or a song, or a movie – that thing everyone is talking about? I seem to always have a way of jumping on the bandwagon – but I have a special way of doing it. I like to wait until the bandwagon has passed all the way through town and is clear out of site. And then when it’s parked somewhere and everyone has gotten off, that’s when I hop on and start throwing a party for it. This is what has happened to us with Frozen. We received a free digital download from our generous employer back when it was so popular and winning awards – but that did not tempt us to watch it, oh no. And when we finally did watch it a few weeks ago, I was less than impressed. There was no way it could live up to the hype, and there was also no way it could live up to The Little Mermaid. But then we watched it again. And then I heard Brendan singing the snowman song while he was playing – and that was all it took for me to download the soundtrack. Then I realized I was listening to the music even when Brendan wasn’t in the car – then I caught DADDY listening to the music while he was working late one night. Then Brendan and I started singing “Love is an Open Door” to each other (some day we’ll capture a movie of us finishing each others sandwiches…), and now here we are in a full on summer Frozen frenzy over here.

So, we were beyond delighted when we received an invitation to Harper’s Frozen Birthday Party. Looking forward to this party was like waiting for a holiday in our house – Brendan would ask every single day if TODAY was the day Harper’s party. Finally, the day arrived. And since Harper is the “Princess Anna” and her big sister Olivia is “Queen Elsa”, we just couldn’t resist sending a little Kristoff in to wish her a happy birthday.

Brendan did not want to try the costume on, and said he didn’t want to wear it. I think the faux fur scared him. So we agreed that he would just wear it into the party so everyone would know he was Kristoff, and then he would take it right off (hence the non-coordinated shirt underneath…) but when he got to the party, he had no interest in taking it off. In fact, he wouldn’t even take it off for the ride home.

And let me tell you, while the movie didn’t impress us the first time, this party did not disappoint – there was an ice Olaf (done by a FAMILY MEMBER!?!? Excuse me?!?!?!), yummy food, an ice palace – and Queen Elsa herself even came to the party. She told her story and then did amazing face painting for all the kids!
A few pictures below, and then more here (at the bottom) for Grandma:

We were also lucky that Doc McStuffins was seeing patients, because Daddy needed a check-up:

Daddy and Brendan also had an amazing adventure while I went on my annual pilgrimage to the Renegade Craft Fair, but I told him he’s going to have to do his own write-up of that epic fun.

Adventure

With summer here, and a three year old in the house, something has really begun to sink in… I love being the mother of a son. I had plenty of adventure when I was a little girl, but Brendan is opening my eyes to a whole new brand of adventure. I feel like I get to go back and experience childhood through the eyes of a boy, and it’s so much fun. Suddenly I want to go camping and have sword fights and talk about strength and bravery. I gravitate to Peter Pan and the Lost Boys even more than Tinkerbell and the mermaid lagoon. I set up tents in the house, I check out construction sites and race cars, I collect feathers from walks so we can make a headdress. My new favorite movies involve dragons and cars rather than drama and romance and I make playlists called ‘superhero music’. I think of the years to come and can’t wait to spend my days on sports fields, or my vacations in cabins or sleeping bags or RV’s driving across the country. In short: I’m finding myself seeking adventure.

I guess this is why I have been carefully tracking a package this week. It started out as a necessity to keep up with my speedy son on our outside rides, but I realized that I felt much less like a practical Mom and more like a kid on Christmas Eve. When we got home from school today, there it was…

Mommy’s new scooter. Best summer ever.

And speaking of summer and adventure, Daddy and Brendan went on another epic bike ride exploration this weekend. It was hot, and they stopped to eat a popsicle. Daddy reports that it was a nice quiet moment between father and son when Brendan suddenly broke out with the big finish part of one of his new favorite songs, “Innnnnn Suuuuuuummmmeeeeeer!” More on our summer Frozen Frenzy later.

I’m also happy to report, that Brendan is now fully outfitted with the coolest knee pads, elbow pads and gloves ever.

As a side benefit, they might just happen to protect that little daredevil body I love so much.
We went to a real movie in a theater this weekend to catch “How to Train Your Dragon 2” before it left theaters. We all loved it. Brendan sat still for almost the entire film. At one point he got a little fidgety and I asked him if he wanted to take a walk. He said yes, so Daddy took him. They were back moments later – apparently as soon as they hit the top of the aisle, Brendan said he wanted to go back – that he ‘only wanted to go to the top of the ramp’. On the way out, Mommy pulled this viking hat out of her purse (don’t leave home without one) and Chief Brendan walked a few inches taller the rest of the day.
You need to ensure sound sleep, drink plenty of water, reduce stress levels and consume zinc rich food items like oysters, shellfish, brewer’s yeast, wheat germ, wheat bran, eggs, pine nuts, pecan nuts, cashew nuts, viagra no prescription india http://djpaulkom.tv/music-yelawolf-x-dj-paul-kom-light-switch-from-black-fall/ parmesan cheese etc. 3. We have also very surely hit the “why” stage. Oh boy have we hit the why stage. Questions about everything from Pixie Dust to why bad guys are bad, to why he can’t go to school with no pants on. I don’t mind the questions at all. As a philosopher, why is practically my middle name. I’m more worried that Brendan will stop asking why if I give him too much narrative. I’m trying to curb my over-thinking and give three year old appropriate wonder-filled answers. One night he was asking about a shooting star. I gave a brief explanation and then got to the good part – that you got to make a wish when you saw one. We both did our wishing and then he asked (for the first time ever) – ‘what did you wish for?’ I responded with an ‘I can’t tell!’ but then cheated by asking him what he wished for. His answer was simple and perfect: “Cake.” So I told him what I had wished for – that he would live happily ever after. He thought for a second and then with a chuckle in his voice responded “Noooooooo!!!” Why would anyone wish to live happily ever after when they could wish for CAKE? Why indeed.

It wasn’t cake, but we did go back to our new favorite spot for some amazing pizza and free cookie dessert. All that with a side of a beautiful drive, and an extra full moon viewed out of a dirty windshield make for a happy evening. Dirty windshields reek of adventure, don’t you think?

Brendan is doing an awesome job in his new Shark room class adventure at school. The other day I asked him who his favorite new teacher was and without a moment of hesitation he responded, “Teacher Laura”. Teacher Laura is fairly new and I don’t know her very well yet. When I asked him what he liked about Teacher Laura, he said, “I like sitting on her lap when I don’t make good choices.” Hmmmm…. Rob and I have laughed so many times thinking of Brendan saying, “Teacher Laaaauuuuura….I just threw a toy!”. I have certainly seen him make some questionable choices, but I have also seen him playing and learning with a whole new focus, and even more importantly – doing a very good job of sharing and empathizing with his new friends.

Whether we are eating cake or riding scooters or having a sword fight or singing show tunes, it all feels like the summer of adventure to me. In short: Brendan = adventure. And it’s the best one yet. But check back in with my spirit of adventure after our first camping trip.

The fun keeps going

Fourth of July continued with a bang. Here is what happened when we pulled on those rockets:

We had fun doing a BBQ with Grandma and Grandpa – Daddy made some awesome burgers, and Brendan got to have his first s’more. He loved it, but perhaps that goes without saying when it comes to s’mores. The next day we decided to check out our county fair. Grandma and Grandpa love going to fairs – and I remember going every year with them when I was a little girl. We headed straight for the animals, and Brendan got to go into his very first petting zoo. He was very gentle with the animals, and loved being in there with them. We got some ice cream (of course) and Brendan once again ate his weight in ice cream – including asking Grandpa for some of his vanilla malt. Grandpa quickly realized he better finish it or someone else would finish it for him. We had a sad moment when Brendan was not picked as a “team lead” for the pig races, but he quickly got over it and we went over to check out the merry-go-round. Mommy got to ride with him, and we waved at everyone as we went around. Brendan has been seeing the ferris wheel from the car each day and was really excited to go on. Daddy and I feared he might not meet the height requirement, and our second sad moment came when we measured and he wasn’t quite there. But it was nothing that another ride on the merry-go-round wouldn’t fix.

Today we kept up the excitement with a trip to the zoo. We looked at all the animals, but it was pretty warm outside, and most of them were napping. I can’t say that I blame them. Unfortunately there was no hippopotamus, but the giraffes and elephants are always a hit.

Then we let Brendan take his first ride on a sky tram. The sign warned us that it was a 20 minute ride, and we were hoping that Brendan would enjoy it and not be scared of heights… nothing to worry about.

After the sky tram, Brendan told Daddy and I that we did a good job, and he was proud of us and that he was going to let us pick ONE chomping guy (you know, the animals on the stick with the lever at the bottom that makes their mouths move…) from the gift shop. Then very sincerely, he paused and said, “Mom and Dad… I love you.” Stopped us in our tracks. We bent down and all of us had the same idea at the same time, but Brendan was the one to say it – “FAMILY HUG!!!”. What a moment. That’s what I love most about places like zoos – they have a way of allowing space to create moments.

Speaking of moments, we also passed a big field just begging someone to run on it, and Brendan happily obliged. He did have to take one break though…

On the air tram, Brendan noticed there was a ride section, and there was a car ride that looked pretty great to his little eyes. There was also a kid sized roller coaster that looked like a tiger. I asked him if he wanted to ride, but he wasn’t so sure about that one. We had him look at all the choices, but his heart was set on the cars. He had to go on all by himself, and he did great. Excellent driver.

(unless you’re Grandma, you really only need about 5 seconds of this next video…)

Almost as soon as he got off the ride, he told us he wanted to ride the roller coaster. We made him walk over and watch the whole thing to make sure he was ready, and he decided he was. Daddy got the tickets, and we anxiously waited…

Then it was time:

That’s my boy. Miss Gracie called it when B was just a baby – he’s an adrenaline junky. It’s fun to think Daddy and I are going to have another roller coaster buddy!

Oh, and there was also a sword fight:

I wish the weekend never had to end.

Summer

Recently, Brendan has been trying on our flip flops, so I went ahead and sprung for a pair that would fit him. He was thrilled, and immediately asked all of us to put on our flip flops on so we could go for a walk.

My flip flops brought to you by payless shoe source – I brought them to Iowa with me about three years ago. I can remember feeling like I didn’t want to wear them while I was holding the baby, but I do remember throwing them on for one of my roughly 24 trips a day down to the lobby for the 24 hour a day free coffee. It was damn good coffee. Brendan’s flip flops have surfboards on them. He really likes surfboards lately – and in fact, I “tricked” him into wearing pants that were not “soft pants” (sweatpants) by getting him a pair of skater/surfer pants (pictured below). They still have a knit waistband, and a silky lining like sweatpants, but that didn’t prevent some initial tears and struggles in order to get them on the first time.

Then Daddy joined us, but Daddy doesn’t like his toes.

We started out on our walk, and realized that just like riding a bike or a scooter, flip flops require a little practice.

and a little more practice…

And then he got a better idea:

Today is July 4th and we finally made our first visit to the Novato Pancake Breakfast and Parade. We got there plenty early, and it was a good thing – the place was packed by the time the parade started! Clo the Cow from a local creamery was there and Brendan really loved her. Four college aged kids asked if they could sit at our table – two of them were from Oklahoma and two of them were from Arkansas – they were students at the local seminary school. You could tell they weren’t from around here because when a volunteer came over to ask if she could clear their plates they very politely called her “M’am” and made eye contact with her. The accents were also a pretty good clue. Brendan provided the entertainment for these four while they ate. He told them he had a puppy named Chelsea, but that sometimes we called her “poochie”, “poocharoo” or “pup-pup”. He told them about his school and how he is a shark now. He pointed out the “pretty flowers” on the paper cups that held the juice, and told them that his Mommy likes flowers and hearts. They were such sweet kids, and Rob and I wanted to take all four of them home to our house.

While the three’s come with some challenges, it is now far easier to walk around in a crowded public event with Brendan. He stayed right with us and was a complete delight. I let him know that it was so fun to get to do these things with my two best friends. He told me, “you’re my best friend too.”

We learned that some people put their chairs out the night before to get front row seats in the choice spots. We didn’t do that, in fact we didn’t even bring chairs – but we found a nice spot on the curb to camp out and watch with our kettle korn. Before too long, the people in the chairs in front of us scooted over and told us they had two chairs they weren’t using. Soon after that the people they were with who were sitting directly in front of us, insisted on putting us in the front row. We tried to refuse, but they insisted. Then they handed Brendan a squirt bottle to help ‘cool off’ the parade participants. They’ve been going for years and have their routine down. They even invited us back to the same spot next year. Next time, I’ll bring the chocolate cookies. It was awesome – a lot of the people in the parade give out all kinds of goodies (patriotic stamps, candy, stickers, rubber duckies – even popsicles!) and I think Brendan got one of everything. Pays to have a cute kid.

It was an awesome hometown parade, although not nearly enough bands. I told Rob that next year I was going to organize a toddler kazoo marching band. He pointed out some potential hurdles with that plan, so maybe I’ll open it up to any age. Register with me if you’d like to participate.

Brendan passed out on the 5 minute drive home, and now Grandma and Grandpa are on their way up for a spur of the moment BBQ. We’re going to play some bocce ball, lawn bowling, and see what happens when you tug on these long strings…

If you don’t have any plans, come on over to our Happy Birthday America party.
